DOLPO & SHEY GOMPA Most Primitive Mountain Region GRADE: A DURATION: 15 - 27 DAYS Max. altitude: 4500m. Trek into west Nepal's Dolpo district. Long off limits to foreign visitors, it has just recently been opened. This is a pioneering adventure in the truest sense. Home of the Shey monastery and the famed Crystal mountain, this region was the focus of Peter Matthiessen's popular chronicle of Himalayan exploration "The Snow Leopard". For those adventurers who have already explored the Everest and Annapurna regions, Dolpo offers access to a very primitive landscape and isolated Buddhist culture highlighted by ancient monasteries rarely seen by westerners. Many optional trek is possible such as by crossing high passes of about 5000m via Kagmara. |
