THE CLASSIC EVEREST Original expedition trail to Everest Base CampGRADE: A
DURATION: 22 DAYS
Max. altitude: 5546m.

Not too long ago, mountaineering expeditions had to walk all the way from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp, a good month's walk. Most expeditions and trekkers now start their adventures from the airstrip at Lukla. We follow the same route as the early expeditions, starting from Jiri, a day's ride from Kathmandu. We will be walking through some of the most beautiful countryside in Nepal, the forested hills of Solu, passing Buddhist monasteries and over 3,000 meter passes, slowly gaining fitness and acclimatizing as we steadily gain

height. Soon we cross the Dudh Kosi (milk river) and head north through pine forests to Jorsale Village where we enter the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park and Namche Bazaar at 3450m, the main village of the Khumbu.

From Namche we continue to Thyangboche side, our camp providing superb views of Kwangde, Taweche, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Kangtaiga and Thamserku. We spend two nights at Dingboche (4336m) providing a day to explore the Imja Khola valley. Again we are surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. Gorak Shep at 5,191m is our highest camp and we spend two nights here. From the top of Kala Pattar (5,546m) there are superb views of Everest south-west face, Nuptse and the Lho La, the point which Mallory reached in 1921 to look into the western side. We have a full day to visit Everest Base Camp, the climax of the trek. It is an amazing walk over the Khumbu glacier to the site of Base Camp at the foot of the tumbling Khumbu icefall, an incredible landscape of rock and ice. With the hard work behind us, our return to Namche and on to Lukla, through scrub juniper, rhododendron and birch forests is relaxed and easy. From Lukla a spectacular and exciting mountain flights takes us back to Kathmandu height.
