ANNAPURNA SANCTUARY Heart of the Annapurnas GRADE: B DURATION: 11 - 15 DAYS Max. altitude: 3939m.  Said to be one of the loveliest places in the world, the Annapurna sanctuary is that space enclosed by the Annapurna range. The scenery is spectacular as one is dwarfed by the towering peaks above. Treks begin out of Pokhara, a valley 200 km west of Kathmandu. Ascending out of Pokhara's township, the trail first follows rice paddies, tropical oak forest, then moves upwards into rhododendron and fir forest before reaching the treeless landscape of the high mountains. It passes through the homeland of the famous Gorkha soldiers, and their pleasant little hamlet surrounded by neatly terraced fields with groves of banana and bamboo, then through fern and orchid huge forests, all the time with magnificent views of the approaching Annapurna mountain. |
